Teaching to learn.

In my capacity as Education and Culture chair of the Jamaican Canadian Association, I have been tutoring K-12 students from the Greater Toronto Area. These students attend the Saturday Morning Tutorial Program (SMTP) at the Jamaican Canadian Association.  The SMTP program offers students assistance with their assignments and strengthens their soft skills through culturally responsive pedagogy.  We also implement a culture of care when tutoring our students.

I am blessed to be given the opportunity to interact with these students as I learn so much of beauty, friendship and forgiveness.  I typically work with the younger students who willingly assist their colleagues, try to cheer each other up when someone is feeling moody and encourage each other.
They also express such joy when they see each other. From this interaction, I am reminded that teaching is a dialogical relationship between teachers and learners.
